My love for wardrobe styling and costume design came from watching Roman Polanski's cult classic, Rosemary's Baby. Mia Farrow's very 60's, mod, baby doll wardrobe inspired me to get into the industry. Never before had I watched a film and seen the costumes take on a personality of themselves and play a key role.

Anthea Sylbert brought these costumes to life (she was later nominated for 2 Academy Awards in Costume Design for her work in Chinatown, and Julia).

Andy Cohen I love you

I think we all need to thank Andy Cohen from Bravo TV for creating all the Real Housewives, Rachel Zoe, Top Chef and more and keeping the drama alive on his weekly, cocktail drinking show, Watch What Happens Live.

His genuine, fun loving personality was discussed in last week's Style section of the New York Times, as well as his celebrity friendships, i.e. Sarah Jessica Parker, Anderson Cooper. He stated today on the View that there is a secret to the reunion shows, "the key to working with people is listening to them." The fact that he is capable to keep order and peace while asking the questions we all want to ask is why we keep watching. He seems to truly enjoy the world in which he has created.

So lets all celebrate Andy and his under-rated genius tonight by drinking a whiskey and ginger ale–his cocktail of choice–and watching whatever is on Bravo, because chances are he made it happen.

Golden Globes - Give Me Color

I have to say that I was extremely impressed last night with the looks of Hollywood's leading ladies at the 2011 Golden Globes. Everyone looked age appropriate, sexy with out trying too hard and just plain pretty!

My vote for MVP goes to the most gorgeous of them all, the stunning January Jones. I will be the first to admit that a cut out gown is usually a slutty choice for an awards ceremony, but this spring tulip red, fringe Versace dress was not only sexy as hell, it was playful and hit Miss Jones in all the right places. This was the best look of the night because of the whole package: red lips, soft Betty Draper hair, and not too much bling. Simple and to the point – ouch! Grade: A +

It appears that color won last night. Rounding out my top favorites for the night were Julianne Moore, Mila Kunis, and Tina Fey. The bright shades really made these women look incredible but really it was their wise choice of silhouette, fit, and the perfect amount of accessories. Grade: A

My favorite trend for the night was the long sleeved gown. Worn well by Angelina Jolie, Anne Hathaway, Annette Benning and Leighton Meester. Giovanna Battaglia - Not Just Another Style Icon

2010 was the year of the fashion editor, not her work, but rather an obsession of her daily wardrobe decisions. You can have a look on Style.com weekly and I guarantee that you will see an of the moment photo of either Anna Dello Russo, Kate Lanphear, or Giovanna Battaglia, the new style icons. Looking at photos of either Anna or Kate – most likely on Tommy Ton’s fashion photo blog Jak and Jill dedicated to the street wears of popular editors, models and any other fashion people – you can predict that Anna will be in a voluminous, colorful, short dress, with or with out head gear and of course high heels and her pin straight long hair, and Kate will be in black or almost black grey or army green, studded out on one or more accessory, with her platinum cropped do swept to the side. But it is Giovanna that will surprise you every time.

Giovanna is a woman with a very distinctive personal style yet you can’t quite put your finger on it or explain it with concrete pieces. Yes she wears skirts, layers and dresses and heels, but that’s obviously not enough for this equation. What you should do is explain the aura of her style. It is a mix of über sophistication and expert Italian tailoring. It’s as if she has a tiny old lady seamstress who from a lineage of couture seamstresses, hand sews all of Giovanna’s incredible garments to fit her body like a glove. Battaglia was the in house model for Dolce & Gabbana before becoming a freelance stylist and Accessories Editor at Italian Vogue, so it appears she got pretty used to clothes being made to fit her.

It is interesting that as an accessories editor she does not over do it. She has a real love of shoes, but it is obvious that when she finds a pair that she loves, she will find a way to wear them on a regular basis. When asked where her inspiration comes from when getting dressed in the morning, she said, “depends how I wake up…from the mood I have, and maybe some times just because I want to wear that pair of shoes and I work around that.” She is practical with style decisions; her first thoughts in the morning are, “what’s the weather like?” And when it comes to jewelry she is seen frequently with not too fussy or major statements pieces but simple cuffs like a fashion warrior.

This is a woman who knows what looks good on her and therefore her confidence is worn all over her. You have to have that fashion ego to be able to experiment as if it is second nature like Ms. Battaglia. It’s her style tenacity that creates her no fuss, oh this old thing essence. It is not a dissection of a uniform look or an over the top get up. Anyone can be iconic for the moment, but it is the whole package that cannot be created again and again.

Flamenco - Feel the Passion

Flamenco can be described as the interpretation of life's manic depressiveness and the sexual expression between men and women. This is performed through the craft of incredibly emotional guitar melodies used to inspire improvisational singing and dancing in combination with rhythmic stomping and clapping.

The other night we celebrated the birthday of my very best friend Nadine by witnessing this passionate performance at Alegrias en la Nacional. Located on the second floor of a brownstone on 14th Street, the long narrow room was filled with little tables, some old Spanish couples getting a fill of their heritage, as well as a hodge-podge of NYers looking for a new cultural experience.

The raw talent of each player in the performance definitely stomped out the fashion. The men, predominately with greasy, curly, slicked back hair and interesting suit choices, straight out of "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?" The only woman, in a typical red flamenco ruffled skirt, was worshiped like a goddess on two strong, powerful feet.

The singing, though throats appeared to be strained, was incredible. They sang their little hearts out of fervor, followed by misery. On the contrary the guitarist, almost with out any emotion, lead the group of five players to perform this beautiful ancestral dance to a group of American kids.

At the end, we were all speechless.

I have been listening non stop to Kanye's new album My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy and playing over and over in my head the intensely suspenseful, and gorgeous scenes of Darren Aronofsky incredible film, The Black Swan.

All I have to say, with out being a spoiler, is get to the theatre and see Black Swan – Natalie Portman is beyond talent in the role of a good girl being forced to find her bad side as the newly appointed prima ballerina.

And download Kayne's latest album, or get the sum up by watching his short film Runaway (which is actually really pretty). I didn't want to give him the credit because I have never been a fan of his character – even before the whole Taylor Swift incident– but he knows what he's doing. This album is definitely a window into his head but at the end of the day it is just really awesome to listen to while your on the train minding your own business.

Both pieces of work not only hit a cord with in you, they do so in a kind of fucked up yet attractive fashion and I'm into it.

Closet Overhaul

The idea of a closet overhaul is to cleanse yourself of the clothing that is in a ball in the back of your closet, getting dusty on the hanger or just doesn't work for you anymore. Reasons to rid yourself of these clothes could be because your body has changed, you got a new job or profession, or you are no longer the same person that you were when you first bought those jeans with the sparkles on the butt.

Things to keep in mind:

1. This is a cleansing process – out with the old to give room for the “new”

You will no longer be weighed down, literally and figuratively. This purge will give you back that dreaded morning time wasted on figuring out, "What am I going to wear?" and give you the confidence to break the long habit of wearing your uniform of black pants and 3/4 sleeve shirt.

You have to go into this knowing that the goal is to get rid of the old and start fresh with the new. This could be actual new pieces or revamped older pieces.

2. If you have not worn it for over a year it is not going to happen this year – get rid of it

You need to remember when the last time you wore it was, and be honest with yourself. If you haven’t worn it for over a year, it's time to move on. If it was that special you would have figured out a way to wear it by now.

3. You might have changed since you bought that top

It is a waste of space if the only reason that you are holding on to it is because you think its pretty, it reminds you of when you were in college, or when you were 3 sizes smaller. If there is no purpose then there is no need to keep it holding on to it.

4. Don't give yourself anxiety over whether or not you should hold on to those jeans

You cannot harp on one piece of clothing for a long time. If it is taking too long to decide if you want it then place it aside in the “Maybe” pile and go back to it later. Most likely by the time you go back to it you’ll be on a role and decide that it’s not worth this intense thought process.

5. Make piles – Keep, Donate, and Alter

Keep – you love it, you wear them all the time, you wear those dresses to formal events, seasonal pieces i.e. winter coat and bathing suits, functional pieces i.e. gym clothes
Donate or Consignment– these are the NO pieces that you know are no longer of use and/or do not fit properly. Bag up the Donate pile and take it to your local thrift shop, or church or charity. You can also try and sell the pieces that are designer, they are always a commodity.
Alter/hem – Look at some of the clothes that you wear or wore a lot in the recent past and see if they need hemming or if a strap broke off. You can also revamp a piece by taking up the hem or dropping the neckline. This pile should only be used if you will go through with talking to a tailor and not if it will just sit in your closet for another year collecting dust.

Balenciaga: Spanish Master

I know we Americans always think of the French as being nationalistic, (as we if we aren't, who are we kidding) but I have to say the Spanish come in a close tie. This is visualized through Balenciaga: Spanish Master, at the Queen Sofia Spanish Institute.

This retrospective captures all of the rich, lush and technically detailed – "a ruffle must be intelligent" – designs of genius, Cristobal Balenciaga. Most importantly though, it tells his story and beautifully illustrates the innately deep rooted facets of being a Spaniard.

Walking around Hamish Bowles's perfectly curated show, I felt nostalgic of my Catholic school upbringing, Spanish art history courses, and flamenco performances seen while vacationing in Spain. It was very interesting to see that even though Balenciaga's couture house was based in Paris, he never left Spain.

Spanish artists, i.e. Diego Velazquez, and Goya are so much more then painters. They represent culture and heritage, and their works of art explain this country's long history. Take these evening dresses:

The Reality of the Newly Iconic Stylist

Yesterday I read this great article, The New Icons of Fashion written by Ruth La Ferla in the NY Times Style section. It was about the ever growing popularity of the fashion editor/stylist.

She mentioned (of course) the "Barbie doll of the Internet" Ms. Anna Dello Russo of Vogue Japan and icy cool Kate Lanphear of Elle as the new fashion icons for not necessarily the women reading their magazines – median ages range from 32-42 – but for the young girls who are obsessing over their everyday shoe choices to hair styles. And these girls are not reading their magazines and interpreting their styled looks, they are looking on blogs devoted to their every move. But most importantly they are checking in with It Kid blogger, Mr. Tommy Ton of Jak and Jil.

(It would be ridiculous not to mention the fact that Tommy Ton has now created his own buzz while simultaneously creating the celebrity status of these editors and stylists.)

But what got me about Ms. La Ferla's article was the fact that she mentioned that for years and years stylists have been the "unsung worker bees" of the industry. It has not been until recently with the over abundance, in a good way, of blogs – most importantly photo blogs – and documentaries like the September Issue that we have gotten a glimpse into what a stylist does and who he or she is, well what they let us see.

But that being said, I have to stress that fact that the stylist's role has definitely been glorified and shined up like a princess cut diamond. The real reality is that a stylist's job is not glamorous. Schlepping garment bags and shopping bags, remembering all the looks for every model or client, organizing hundreds of accessories and garments and dealing with the ever changing and competing opinions of clients, directors, photographers and celebrities.

It is hard work especially when you are looking all fantastic in those 6 inch platform booties. But we do the job because we love it and we want to be style icons for those girls in college who want to be paid nothing to help schlep the clothes to the shoot.

Freja has been a very popular face for the last few years. This Danish beauty pretty much walks in every show during the month of fashion week. Not only is she Karl Lagerfeld's favorite model for his side projects like short films, but she is the face of many campaigns – Tom Ford's eye wear – as well as being shot for high fashion mags like French Vogue or W.

It is her rocker edge – she has 16 tattoos, and is usually in a black leather jacket – and striking bone structure that make her most designers and editors first choice for the latest show or shoot. I love to see her in a very feminine silhouette with her hair slicked back – the look for Lavin Fall 2011 show – or the complete opposite with tousled hair in her face paired with an over sized top with trousers – as seen in the Stella McCartney Fall 2011 show. Florence and the Machine

Last night we went to see Miss Florence and her Machine at Terminal 5.

Behind her and the band was a beautiful floral patterned tapestry, and mixed with the incredible mix of blue, purple, and apricot lighting, looked like the backdrop of Sandro Botticelli’s “La Primavera,” (The Arrival of Spring).

Florence appeared both ethereal and dreamy in her peachy cream colored body suit and matching whimsical silk cape. She kept floating it up and down while she sang her little heart out. She truly appeared goddess like last night but it's her voice and lyrics that give her a darker, rock feel. I think it's that combination of soft and sweet with a spicy, harder edge that makes her so lovable and popular.

From younger angasty girls bouncing up and down, to thirty-something men silently mouthing along to the words, all enjoyed the show just the same. It was not only the music and the gorgeous Florence that made it such a wonderful experience, it was the whole package deal of the energy of the packed venue that made it so successful. Everyone there likes her, and I do too.

I saw these boots on a woman on the subway, who was also carrying a Coach purse to match (of course she was).

Seriously! Coach, it's bad enough that your logo is a complete knock off of the Gucci logo but you're going to knock off Uggs too?!?!?!? Come on! Is your design team that tapped out for ideas that you thought making Ugg boots was a good idea? I can't even blame the lady I saw for buying them, SHAME ON YOU COACH!

Halloween at P.S. 1

While you were nursing a hang over from your Halloween festivities of Saturday night, Jordan and I were at P.S. 1 interacting with live art installations, fashionistas, and yes believe it, David Blaine.

I know you might feel like I used to (key words here are used to) feel about Mr. Blaine, "whatever he's not really holding the card that you said was in your head," but guess what, he really is! And he's awesome! David Blaine was just hanging out in one of the galleries while a video that he made with Adam Kimmel was playing on loop behind him. It was awesome because not everyone realized that he was there doing live tricks. He was like the nerdy/now cool kid in junior high who can beat box and only a few of you decided to watch him perform in the corner of the cafeteria. One trick he did was have a girl hold 10 cards up to her heart while he "counted cards". He fanned the rest of the deck in his hands and counted up to 7 (a number that she chose), and I swear to God, 7 cards magically appeared in her hand! And of course there was someone saying, "How'd you do that?!" Guy, I don't think he's going to tell us.

Also happening simultaneously, was a fun collaboration between Olaf Breuning and Cynthia Rowley. Cynthia Rowley designed a line of denim shift dresses, long sleeve tops and trousers. Then Olaf had a station set up where he would pour paint from above onto the model dressed in one of Cythia's creations. The result was a paint drenched model and a beautifully colored, dripped on garment, which was on display in the next room. We picked a lucky time to watch because Olaf poured the paint onto Cythina herself! It was so cool and simple but really fun to watch and the finished garments were like a master craft project successs! It was a very complete installation and collaboration.

I think instead of getting annoyed with slutty firewomen, witches and fairies, and their idiot boyfriends, our Halloween celebration was also a success.

Day at Wave Hill

Yesterday I had the pleasure of spending the gorgeous autumnal day of warm weather and sunshine with 3 girlfriends up in the Bronx at the incredible estate and grounds of Wave Hill.

Nestled into the Hudson River Valley, overlooking the trees in mid foliage on the other side of the river, lies the vast property full of perfectly curated and landscaped green houses, ponds, gardens, trees and fields. A little treasure only 20 minutes by Metro North a shuttle bus awaits you, it's almost too easy.

These photos do not do the grounds and flowers justice, you have to just get there and see it yourself, before it gets too cold.

Gucci Spring/Summer 2011

Who doesn't appreciate a breathe of fresh air? This collection really let out a gust. I just can't help but appreciate the designs of Frida Giannini.

With long silhouettes heavy on the drape and a punch of color, everyone's attention was caught. A little fringe, some straw it actually made me want to get back to the beach, well almost. This collection was not only fresh and alive from the get go but it also left a soft taste in your mouth with the quietness of the monochromatic tans and camels and of course the comfortable cherry on the top–a little bit of token black.

I'll speak for all of us and say we all want a sleeveless trench.

Meet Jordan Spilman

He's my insanely talented husband.

Jordan has been creating some beautiful work on a daily basis. It has been a struggle to keep up with his blogging rate so I have decided to let his artist creativity shine.

I am most impressed with his lion sculpture, it took him about 3 months to finish. And I really love his recent commissioned work for Surface to Air Accessories, the birds are sick! And you also have to check out his most current collection titled "Dogs I Know". I think that's self explanatory.

And even if your not a visual person you will enjoy his witty commentary. He's a funny guy.

In between shows yesterday, my friend Trinity Rose and myself spotted Olof eating lunch outside in the Meat Packing District, and could not help but take a photo of him.

Just look at that sick brown leather corset belt and matching riding boots. And that necklace! All paired with a simple white button down and trousers.

His androgynous style, sweet disposition and perfect English just made me want to move to Stockholm. They really know what they are doing those Swedes.

Suzanne Rae Spring/Summer 2011 - Desert Beauty

I didn't think that it was possible to want to be back in Spring/Summer clothing, yet watching the Suzanne Rae presentation yesterday brought me right back to wishing I was in light, natural flowing fabric to brave the heat.

Suzanne Pelaez, the designer behind this beautifully chic and up and coming line, took her inspiration from the American West. A palette of cream, pastel pink, blue denim, black and tan with a pop of deep magenta and chartreuse, depicts the colors you will naturally find out there. The nostalgic imagery of cacti, old cars and dusty sunsets were printed on beautifully draped dresses and pants.

Pelaez has been executing some spectacular designs in hemp for the past few seasons. It was seen again for this Spring 2011 collection in not only tops but also high waisted shorts and tapered trousers belted with cream nautical rope. The dresses, some short in the front, long in the back, another repeat silhouette from past seasons, were shown in both prints and solids. The pièce de résistance, a magenta ruffled off the shoulder sheer chiffon gown, paired with grey patent leather, lace up flat booties.

I think it was the well executed styling/accessorizing that sold the whole collection of easy breezy, light and simple. The models appeared relaxed and comfortable in flat oxfords, two-toned saddle shoes and wide brimmed hats with dewy make up and pulled back voluminous braided hair.

I Bought a Fake Chanel Purse

Yes, I am admitting it, I have done the unthinkable. And I have to say, I feel ashamed.

I am not a tourist from Columbus, Ohio, and I'm also not a 15 year old girl, so why did I buy one? I didn't set out to find it. It wasn't like I went down to Canal Street to seek out a Chinese women who would take me through to the back of her tiny shop and then shove me behind a black curtain that would lead to a even tinier closet chuck full of fake designer purses made in China.

I happen to just be walking up 5th Ave. And there on the sidewalk, an African man, stressing out about the cops, had a little display of imitation bags on top of a sheet. Among a bunch of fake Louis Vuittons, was the classic black flap quilted purse. All the pieces appeared to be in place: double C's hardware, gold chain and leather strap. I thought to myself, although I do not have $1000 + to splurge, I have always wanted this iconic Chanel purse. So why not get this wannabe instead? No one will notice the difference.

Oh yes they will.

I get it home and realize it smells like gasoline and has this really annoying extra flap inside that just should not be there. Along with the fact that the quilting is just shit, ripped threads sticking out in places. I wore it outside and felt like, well from a distance, it looks pretty good. But god forbid someone got close! They would ask, what's that smell? How mortifying would that be? I can't wear this bag and not feel self-conscience. What the hell am I going to do with it now?

I can't help but ask myself, why would I make such a taboo purchase? Being a stylist and knowing that I have good taste, I still let myself make such a impulsive purchase. If I was my own client, I would have advised that it wasn't necessary and that there are less expensive, real designer bags that are so much better than a fake Chanel off the street. I think it's solely the fact that this bag is so iconic. Most women and men can tell you who makes the quilted black bag even with out seeing the logo. But it is those double C's that everyone wants a piece of. Have it be Chanel flats, wallet, belt, or T shirt, you want the label, regardless of the design or if you even really like the piece. You give the article or accessory full stylish credit only because you have been told that it is cool. And I am even admitting it myself, I fall into it as well. We all do, its like taking part in fashion history. You feel like you are apart of the club.

Enough With You Skinny Jeans

Is it just me or are you sick of skinny jeans? Maybe it's because I am over the summer although the summer is not over, and therefore I cannot imagine having skin tight denim on my legs. Or, I'm just done with them.

I had an appointment with 2 lovely sister clients yesterday at their home, and I styled them in a bunch of great outfits that included, the token skinny black jeans. We loved the looks. I found myself even repeatedly suggesting, "that would go great with your skinny jeans". The looks were great on them. Yet when I think about getting myself dressed in cooler temperatures, I don't want to think about my skinny jeans.

So what are my options? What the hell was I wearing before skinny's?

I had a look in my wardrobe and found my go to high waisted, wide leg trouser jeans, a pair of old school Banana Republic "boyfriend jeans" that I picked up at a thrift store about 5 years ago, a pair of stupid boot cut jeans, and a pair of Marc Jacobs flaired denim. I love the high waisted, wide leg jeans and wear them all the time, but as for the others I'm not feeling them as my fall back autumn/winter pairs.

Now what jeans am I going to wear for Fall?

I started to shop around for some possibilities, and to tell you the truth there are not many NON skinny's out there. If anything there are more options in the skinny category then the other cuts combined, i.e. ultra skinny, paint on skinny, high rise and low rise skinny, cigarette, ankle grazer etc. The only non skinny options that I'm interested in are boyfriend, flair and sometimes wide leg but I definitely saw more of the former than the latter.

So I guess I will I just have to wear my old school Banana Republics until the hunt is over. When I finally do find the coveted pair, I'll let you know.

Then the challenge of looking at my wardrobe with fresh eyes will take the place of the denim hunt.

Why we love Alexander Wang

Alexander Wang started out like most of the people in fashion from our generation, with internships. He was studying at Parsons and got an internship at Teen Vogue, Marc Jacobs and Derek Lam. In his sophomore year he designed his first line and the rest is "dreams come true" history.

Wang has brought the model off duty, loose, casual, cool and chic back to fashion. It's his "I just threw this on" aesthetic, paired with bold, yet easy to wear accessories, that makes women crave his collections.

It was confirmed today that he is opening his flagship store in Soho, at the former Yohji Yamamoto store on the corner of Mercer and Grand Street. Can't wait for that!

I fell upon By Karl, Mr. Lagerfeld's blog yesterday and couldn't pull myself away from it. I have always had the utmost respect for this insanely talented and intellectual man.

After reading The Beautiful Fall by Alicia Drake I realized how intense and serious he was about not only fashion but literature, art, design, cinema and architecture, he is quite the scholar. This book is a fascinating biography of the fabulous and often parallel lives of Karl Lagerfeld and Yves Saint Laurent. I highly recommend it.

But back to the blog, check out the short films like "Shopping Fever" and "Remember Now" as well as Karl's photography shoots with German Vogue, Harper's Bazaar and mainly more. He is sick!

Arcade Fire

I spontaneously bought tickets yesterday to see Arcade Fire for their first out of 2 shows at the Garden. I have always been a fan and have regretted not seeing them a few years ago when they were touring with their new album at the time, Neon Bible. But like most impulsive decisions, the outcome was so much more than I was ever anticipating.

We were like our young selves, Nadine and I, moving as close to the stage as we could and chatting it up with our seat neighbors about how psyched we were to be there. As soon as they came out, all 9 of them, we, the whole audience, was captivated. Ironically, they opened up with Ready to Start, a song off their new album The Suburbs. Being that Suburbs was released only on August 3rd, one would think that this was a gamble but I think we all appreciated the freshness. They went on to play some all time favorites like Neighborhood #2 (Laika), Rebellion (Lies), and Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels) while successfully threading new great songs, Rococo and the title track, The Suburbs through out the set.

I was up on my feat dancing the whole time, enjoying watching the main 6-7 band mates all run around the stage to find their place and instrument for the next song. Their present, pure talent, and energy was impressive and magnetic. Front man Win Butler's voice and presence was great to watch, as he at times was unaware of his movements, so overcome by the moment that he stepped off stage a few times to stand in the crowd and sing in their faces. But I think it's his darling, spunky little wife Regine who stole the show. She literally skipped and bounced around the stage with her little gold sequin and neon red trimmed dress with matching fingerless gloves, from drums, to piano, to accordion. Her voice though, is mesmerizing. Hearing her sing Haiti from their first album Funeral and the newest, Sprawl II (Mountain Beyond Mountain), made me wish that she sang more of the songs. And like any great show, they left us with an insane encore playing first, my favorite song, Keep the Car Running off their sophomore album Neon Bible, and then closing with the all time favorite Wake Up, leaving everyone on a little high.

I think it was the presence of passionate, incredibly talented, true musicians that made it such a brilliant show. Win made a point to thank the fans and NYC for our support. He said that NY has a special place in their hearts, as it is a second home to them. I just want to thank him and Regine and the rest of the band for a wonderful, joyous show. Thanks

Trends to Look Out for this Autumn/Winter

Velvet

We saw a great deal of velvet on the runways of New York. Most importantly designers have shown velvet in truly rich jewel tones, i.e. ruby, garnet, sapphire, emerald and topaz.

L’Wren Scott’s designs included tailored velvet jackets where as Ralph Lauren showcased velvet in loose, draping tunics and tapered trousers. Alexander Wang even added extra detailing to velvet with studs and lace.

I predict that we are going to be seeing this lush texture in all types of garments and in many silhouettes.

When styling velvet one should remember that textured pieces can be either the main focus of an outfit or a subtle accent. For the fashion forward woman pair a velvet dress with a fur coat. And for a woman with a simpler style, velvet pants or leggings with a simple tee or tunic.

Feminine Suiting

Fashion week reintroduced the “power suit” but in a very ladylike silhouette. Suits were not only seen as pant suits but more importantly as skirt suits, emphasizing feminine shapes.

Marc Jacobs designed some gorgeous suits in light hues and beautiful cuts. He showed a pencil skirt with a high neckline blazer and a below the knee skirt with a double breasted, cut out neckline jacket. Proenza Schouler and Zac Posen showcased flowy mini skirts with both cropped and tailored jackets.

Suits for women can be versatile. There is the classic purpose for work attire but a pretty ladylike suit can be just as sophisticated and powerful worn to dinner with high heels and sheer blouse.

Fur

Fur is most definitely here to stay. It would be hard to pick out a designer who showed at NY Fashion Week who didn’t have at least one trim or garment with fur.

We saw an abundance of fur this past Fall season, mainly fur coats. Fall/Winter 2010 we will be seeing fur in more than just outerwear. In Michael Kors collection we saw a fur skirt and oversized, exaggerated scarves. Marc Jacobs showed fur trimmed coats reminiscent of the 1950’s as well as cute chubby boleros.

There is also the option of real fur or faux for most pieces. If you don’t want to commit to a full fur coat there will be the option to go for an accessory.

You Need Support Even in the Summer

So far this summer, I cannot help but notice that too many women are neglecting to support themselves. And I don't mean emotionally, I mean physically. Most importantly their breasts.

I have been observing MANY women who are wearing either too small bikini tops, triangle tops that don't support their chest, or tube tops that might as well not even be there because you basically see the outline of the whole breast. I have seen WAY too many saggy boobs.

I think woman need to look at the bikini that they have been wearing and say to them selves, "Would I be wearing this type of bra under a shirt?" The answer to that question will be the answer to this question, Do you really think it's flattering to wear that bikini on the beach?

I find it very interesting that women do not approach bathing suit shopping the same way they do bra shopping. Ultimately it is the same thing, right? It is a garment that is supposed to support your breasts in the best way to fit your body type. So why do I keep seeing women popping out of their bathing suit, or squeezing in it, or most importantly not keeping the girls up?!

My advice is to try on all your tops, if you look at yourself in the mirror and see that your breasts are sagging or falling out, toss the top. And when you are looking for a new bikini find one that has either under wire, thicker straps, or just better support. Think of it as a bra, not a bikini. This will make you look better and feel better when you are strutting yourself on the beach.

Right! So I did a little research for you and found a few reasonably priced cuties that you could wear to an outdoor wedding or a formal wedding. All of which could easily be worn again to work, dinner out with your loved one, or drinks with your friends.

Watercolor Twist Strap dress $130 - I would pair this dress with a great silver heel, sparkly clutch, and silver bangles.

Heritage Embellished Bib dress $150 - I think this dress would look amazing with gold or bronze wedges and a soft printed scarf, in the same color palette, worn as a shawl for when it gets chilly later in the evening.

Pleated Watercolor $130 - This dress is a little similar to the first dress yet it has a great neck line for women with a little more of a bust who can benefit from some extra coverage. I love the nude platforms with it! Nude heels are very sexy, and versatile and extend your legs. The necklace and belt are amazing as well. All this needs is a sweet little purse with a chain strap.

Pins and Needes $78 - This maxi dress would be great for an outdoor day wedding. I would dress it up a little with either a tan heel or wedge and a chunky necklace to draw attention back up to your pretty face.

Motel Betsy dress $88 - I love the print of this dress. I would keep this cutie very simple with just a red shoe (could be wedge or even flats) and long gold necklace. Wearing your hair up in a bun or ponytail can really accentuate your neckline and shoulders making you look even more elegant than you already are.

Ecote Braided dress $68 - A solid color dress is like a blank canvas. You could add a great belt in black and wear black heels, you could add a pop of color by accessorizing with a bright pink clutch or a yellow hair piece. The possibilities are endless!

$29.99 (sale)- With such a bold graphic print you don't have to go crazy with accessories, let the dress speak for itself. I would play up the black and white and just go with basic black heels and big black or white cocktail ring. Keep it simple!

$49.99 (sale) - This dress has a really sweet print. I would continue with that look. Try strappy sandals, and dainty jewelry. I would carry a dressed up straw purse with it.

I know it can feel like a chore to find the "perfect dress" but have fun with it. And there is nothing wrong with wearing the same dress to another, unrelated of course, wedding. I was researching some color options for a project that I'm working on and found myself on the Pantone website. I'm one of those people who can look though the Pantone book for hours. I love folding and tearing out the little chips and then placing them all together to form a palette. Color nerd!

But while searching around the Pantone website I found this amazing link to one of their Lifestyle sites called Colorstrology. It not only includes the astrology of your birthday but also shows you your personal color based on your birth date. How cool is that! I have always loved looking though birthday books because it can be scary how accurate they can be. Have a look at your birthday and your loved ones as well. It's fun to not only read about the personality traits associated with birthdays, but it's great to see what color best describes the "the real you".

Sonia Rykiel's collection was inspired by an Art Deco hotel that she could view from her window. How pretty is that thought?!

I'm very attracted by the zigzag's that are seen in staple accessories. I think any of us would love to be wearing these little cuties. And if anyone reading this knows me well they will know that I cannot get enough of this color palette: blush pink, dusty pink, apricot, coral, and of course black, white, and cream. I want to wear these colors all year round!

This collection epitomizes my idea of the chic play on feminine masculinity.

The combination of trousers and jacket is so well executed that it makes me want to be on holiday in this exact look right now. Not to say that I don't think this thought almost everyday but it does make we want to be in Paris or Milan in November and not my usual fantasies of bikinis in the Caribbean in March.

It only seems fit that Frida Giannini's take on this collection was "Stylish Travel". She definitely executed her theme. For sure, you will be seeing me in a similar, cheaper, version of this look come time!

Sex and the City 2

So I finally went to see the much anticipated and highly reviewed (mostly in negative prose) Sex and the City 2. And I have to say, I really enjoyed it!

Highlights:

the ridiculously over the top, full on designer costumes, thank you Patricia Field. I especially could not get over the fact that they had 3 costume changes in the desert while riding on camel back!
Standford and Anthony's wedding! Wow! Liza Minnelli singing "Single Ladies", gay boy choir, Carrie in a YSL tuxedo oh and it goes on...
and the most ridiculous line I have ever heard in a movie, even coming from Samantha's mouth, "He can be the Lawrence of my LABIA"!!!!! Oh my God, did they really have to go there?

Let's just get one thing straight, whoever gets tickets to go see Sex and the City 2 should know that they are not walking into a screening of brilliant cinema. I knew what I was getting myself into and therefore I was very entertained by the girls who have always been there for my enjoyment.

So who cares if they sounded ignorant while traveling through the Middle East, you would have complained about the same shit if you were on that trip with your best girlfriends. And yea blah blah blah about parenting, menopause, and marriage, it's life and it's what you talk about, or will talk about, with your friends when you get together. The creators/producers might have gotten crazier and crazier with wardrobe, location, sets, and one liners but they have stayed true to their roots, it's 4 women sitting and bitching about their lives. And I have to say I like it!

Carrie Bradshaw wasn't always All That

I think we have all put Miss Carrie Bradshaw on a stylish pedestal through the years (quite a few too many to be exact) of the Sex and the City saga. I have always thought that Patricia Field's styling of Carrie, and the rest of the girls, was well thought out, original and cool. She pushed the standards and made Carrie's look very fun, quirky and at times, I admit, a little over the top.

Yet I never remembered there being any terrible outfits. And then I did some research! A lot of the looks that were the absolute worst were from the first few seasons. Just too many colors, too many accessories, stupid head gear, and cheesy white pointy heels. It's funny to look back and realize that our "always" chic, fashionable friend really looked ridiculous at times. You can definitely see the progression of style for Carrie and the stylist Ms. Patricia Field as well.

I'm not sure when and if you heard about the Marina Abramovic exhibition at the MOMA but I didn't hear about it until about a month into the retrospective and didn't get there until the last week. I had heard that there were performers reenacting past performance pieces of Marina's long history of performance art but did not truly comprehend that Marina herself was going to be sitting there in a chair for the duration of the museum hours, 6 days a week for the entire 3 months. And that she (and the museum) invited you the viewer to sit with her and take part in the installation.

In the last week, I finally went to see Marina and the community that had developed over this period of 3 months. It was quite captivating as I rose up the steps to the 2nd floor to see first the giant lights, then all the people standing, sitting, watching. Then I walked closer to the white outlined perimeter of the space and first saw a young man facing Marina. I quickly made my way around so to see Marina's face. I felt instantly as if I was a part of this piece. I found myself joining the others sitting on the border of white tape, quietly talking to each other about their lives, feelings on the performance, Marina, and their time spent with her. I felt no shame in obviously listening (not responding much) to this group of people as they explained what they felt and thought and understood while they were with Marina.

The only rules for the audience were that you were not to speak to Marina, you had to leave your things behind the border, and you were to only look at her and be present. There was no time limit and you were free to spend the day there if you wanted. Marina said that she was "isolating the group to individuals." The idea was that once you left the line and walked into the space you were taken out the pact and looked at as just yourself. She also explained that she was a tool for people to take part in their own experience, that in order to "change your life, you have to go through your own experiences." This is why there was no time limit. The idea was that everyone handles things in their own way and own time. She stated at the live discussion tonight at the MOMA that when people sat down in the chair that first the sounds of everyone around disappeared, then the physical feeling of sitting in a wooden chair disappeared, then the thoughts of 'is the girl behind me in line going to be mad if I sit longer' disappeared, then the thoughts and feeling of Marina disappeared and then everything disappeared and the person was no longer looking in the eyes of Marina, "they were looking in a mirror, they were looking at themselves."

One of my main interests was her choice of wardrobe. In many of her past performances she went nude or wore masculine clothing. For this performance she chose to wear a long sleeved, long trained gown with a high collar. It was very futuristic queen but she stated that the decision to wear this dress was mainly for function. It was made out of wool so to keep her warm while she sat in one position for such a long period of time.

She also chose to wear a different color dress for each month:

1st month - Blue dress - to keep her mind calm
2nd month - Red dress - to energize her physical body
3rd month - White dress - for clarity

I found her deliberate choice in clothing so interesting because in the past clothing was not much of a thought if at all. It was interesting hearing the re-performers speak about their feeling of being nude to the public. A few claimed that they felt that their emotions and the obvious physical strain on their bodies was more revealing and intimate then the fact that they were naked.

I cannot remember the last time I did anything that ritualistic for any long period of time. I have felt inspired by The Artist is Present and Marina's dedication to her art form. It makes me think that we need to celebrate our bodies, minds, and soul and see what they can do. Maybe we all need to chill for a few hours and rest our minds, or stand still for as long as we can or really think about what we are feeling at the moment and make a difference. I'm still trying to figure out what Marina has truly inspired me to do but I want to thank her for making me think about making a change for the better. She stated at the end of her discussion last night that she felt "PURE LOVE. I have had a complete change, I am a new person, my spirit is different."

I made it to the Manhattan Vintage Show and as always it was incredible, overwhelming and so hard to fight the urge not to buy something in everyone's booth. I seemed to forget that this is the show that all the vintage vendors of NYC, Upstate NY, Massachusetts, Connecticut and elsewhere, save their very best and special pieces to showcase. You will find Victorian dresses, 1930's shoes, 1980's blazers, Art Deco jewelry and much much more!

One of the first stops I made was at Peter and Yarka's booth. They are a lovely couple who love vintage clothing and antiques and sell their wares at the Brooklyn Flea market. I was impressed with how it was organized and how beautiful, feminine, and delicate her pieces were. It was arranged in color order (my favorite, an obvious plus) and very Spring/Summer. I purchased a cool black and white 1980's print blazer. It's a little over sized and long and I'm thinking I might add more buttons to the bottom and wear it as a dress. So great!

The next stop was at Animal Vintage. Maria Barraco had an amazing collection of sick prints and accessories. My favorite piece was this gold lion's head belt. It was incredible! Another woman in the booth was trying on jumpsuits, a sequined animal print jacket, and flowy summer dresses. She also had great bags that if I had not already bought 2 pieces I would have picked one up. Maria moved to Brooklyn recently from Miami and rents out of her space.

The last stop over was at Amacord. I stop by their store locations now and again and I always like what they have but for some reason I always love what they have at this show! There are so many incredible Italian bags, beautiful little skirts and T shirts, etc. I had a few things in my hands but ended up with these great high waisted faintly striped pants that fit me like a glove! So sweet.

My recommendations to make the most of it are the following:

1. Bring cash - most booths do not have a credit card machine and having cash just makes it easier.
2. Wear a dress or a skirt so that if you want to try stuff on it's easier to throw it on under your skirt. And don't bring a lot of baggage with you. It is tight in there and the more stuff you have the harder it is to get around.
3. Bring a friend to bounce ideas off of. Whatever you like in a person's booth they will tell you to buy it regardless of it looking good on you or not!
4. Bargain with the vendors. They most likely will lower the price if you ask.
5. Find the vendors that do not live in NYC. They tend to have better prices.

Every Wardrobe's Essentials

1. Little black (or navy or grey) dress – The classic black dress has always been a great piece to fall back on for formal or work attire. It is easy to throw on and can always be transformed with accessories, jewelry, blazers etc. I include navy and grey because I want you to remember these dress colors are just as chic and sliming and can be used for the same occasions. I think navy is so sexy!

2. Great fitting jeans – Every woman needs a pair of perfect fit denim in their lives. Nothing says you look fat more then wearing ill-fitting jeans. The idea is that great fitting jeans curve you in the right place and either adds volume where you need it or take away where you need to hide it. Women with bigger hips will want to balance out the rest of their leg by getting a pair in a bootleg cut in a darker shade of denim. Women with thin legs can get away wearing lighter shades and more of the skinny cuts. Look out for the denim blog where I solely talk about fit and cut.

3. Perfect Tee – You need a great T-shirt that fits well and shows off the most flattering part of your neck and chest. This can be a classic white shirt but can include a tee with stripes, in a bright color, or a different neckline. I think a perfect tee should be a little longer then your waist so that you can tuck it in or have to option not to.

4. White Blouse – This can either be a typical cotton button down or a silk blouse with ruffles. I think nothing says sophistication like a clean white (or cream) blouse with a collar. It is classic and easy. Add a few necklaces or a cami underneath, and/or a blazer on top, which takes us to the next essential.

5. Blazer – You need a blazer. It is the garment in your closet that you will go to on a regular basis. Wear over trousers with that tee you got and you have a casual suit. I tell my clients all the time to wear their blazers as a light jacket, over a dress or a T shirt with jeans. If you don’t have one get it in black. Blazers have a great way of slimming the body. A cropped blazer will bring in your waist and longer, “boyfriend” blazer will lengthen your torso. The blazer completes an outfit.

6. Cardigan/Knitwear cover up – A simple cardigan is not only complimentary to an outfit it is functional as well. I am all about keeping warm and comfortable. Cardigans are great over dresses and add a belt around the outside to bring in your waist. This is similar to the blazer in that you use it to add to an already put together outfit, it is a layering piece that can be so versatile.

7. Skirt – I know this is very vague but I have worked with a lot of women who seem to never wear a skirt. I think that depending on your body and personality there is an amazing skirt out there that you need to be incorporating into your weekly attire. There is the pencil skirt that has an amazing effect to bring in the curves and accentuate the bottom, where as a flowier A line skirt can hide a bigger bottom. The possibilities are endless with color, print, cut but I will say that the length should either be right above the knee or right below it.

8. Trousers – This is your “black pants”. This is similar to the great fit jeans, in the sense that they have to fit you well for them to be an essential. You want to be able to wear them with that white blouse, or tee to work, dinner etc. Add heels to dress them up, or wear flats and the cardigan to work. They need to be your go to for the week. Black is the best option to start with but grey, khaki, brown etc. will all work well.

9. Classic pumps/heels – Adding height will not only make your legs look better but you are instantly completing a look. A perfect pump will always sell an outfit. Heels with jeans make them look sophisticated. If you need a perfect pump go for black because it is the most versatile. I am a huge fan of prints, i.e. animal print or a pop of color. And don't worry you don't need 6 inches, even just 1-2 inches is great.

10. Good fitting bras and underwear – Nothing ruins an outfit like a bad fitting bra and panty lines! Go to your favorite lingerie spot and ask for a fitting. Make sure you are wearing the right size, most women aren’t. And think about the bottoms that you are wearing, i.e. pencil skirt, you will need to be wearing a thong. Look for seamless panties and look in the mirror before leave the house. You want to make sure that your underwear is not causing bumps because then you are adding more volume where most of us know we don’t need it!

All of these pieces are versatile and interchangeable and should be used over and over again. Remember ladies I want to help you look your absolute best and I know you want to too!

Chanel Fall 2010 - FUR

Seriously? Karl I love you but seriously? I think this collection is just ridiculous. We all know that I love fur but come on! What happened to "Before you leave the house, look in the mirror and remove one accessory"? This collection was a little chunky if you know what I mean. And all I could think while watching the show was how the boots were getting all wet from the melting glaciers! What a pity! But I understand where he was going with this set...

As I watched all the major shows of Fall Fashion Week 2010, the major theme for Fall is FUR. It would be difficult to find a designer who didn't incorporate a trim of fur in their collection.

We are going to see fur in accessories, lapels on jackets, skirts, and of course coats. This will make it easier for you to wear this popular trend. If you are not ambitious enough to go for the full coat then go for the coat with the trimmed collar and/or sleeves. And do not forget my eco-friendly ladies, most brands are making pieces in faux fur, especially the high street stores like Zara, Topshop, and H&M. You will be able to wear fur no matter what your style is. And you should. I do not want to see anyone in those Chanel fur pants!

Prada Fall 2010

There is a real comparison between the Prada show and what Marc Jacobs sent down the runway. It appears that both designers have taken inspiration from the 1950's when women dressed with conservative, ladylike, elegance. This is wonderful for women and I think this trend will be a very successful for fall.

I'm looking forward to Paris Fashion Week. We'll have to wait and see if Louis Vuitton will continue with this very lovely trend.

I was blown away by this seriously cool, chic collection. Peter Dundas has taken the label to a whole new place. I could easily incorporate these pieces into my wardrobe and would love to. I think we will be seeing this collection on a lot of celebs come fall.

A friend told me to look up the image of the woman's suicidal jump from the Empire State Building. Evelyn McHale, only 23 years old, leapt off the observation deck on May 1, 1947. She crossed out a little message to her fiance saying "...I wouldn't have made a good wife for anybody..." She managed to fall on her back onto of a limousine in an angelic pose with the rumble of the car crushed around her like a blanket. So sad yet so sweet. I don't know what else to say about it but I think it is breathtaking and rather pretty.

I Love Clogs

We all need to get our hands on clogs for Spring, but why wait when you can get your them now for this retched cold weather.

You have to check out No. 6. Their shearling booties are incredibly warm and the new Spring collection of clogs are just amazing. I bought a pair from them last year and I absolutely love them. They make any outfit look fun and their practical too. And Mr. Lagerfeld showed us in the Chanel Spring 2010 collection that it's about time that we give our feet a cute, little rest.

The Master Plan: out with the old, in with the cash $$

I advice all my clients to sell the unwanted items we decide to take out of their wardrobes. You can make a nice little buck off of all the rejects! I decided to do some research. I went with a friend who luckily had a car and was not new to selling her clothes. She had a great plan that I am now calling The Master Plan.

1) Beacon's Closet - 88 N. 11th St. Williamsburg #718.486.0816
They open at 11:00. Because it is the biggest and most well know of the 3 stores I am recommending, it is best to get there in the morning. You will encounter a shorter line and wait. They ask for a government issued ID and tell you to either come back in 15-20 minutes or you could sit and watch to make sure that they are giving you a good price for your stuff. I would say if you have high end designer pieces that you are reluctant to sell for a small price then hang out and watch, otherwise shop around. They decide what they want to buy of your pieces and start pricing accordingly. They will give you 35% cash or 50% store credit of the ticketed price.

2) Buffalo Exchange - 504 Driggs Ave. Williamsburg #718.384.6901
They also open at 11:00 but because it is smaller it normally does not have as long of a line. You should take this into consideration because they will not take as much stuff as Beacon's Williamsburg might, hence going there second. They offer you 30% cash and 50% store credit. The people who work there are really sweet.

3) Beacon's Closet - 92 5th Ave. Park Slope #718.230.1630
This Beacon's opens at 12 during the week and 11 on the weekends. This was great to stop by last because they have a different customer type. I found that they were more willing to buy say more of the simpler, professional pieces as opposed to the hip, trendy and unique pieces that the Williamsburg stores were more interested in. They have the same rate of 35% cash and 50% credit. *All 3 stores will take whatever is left over off your hands and donate to a local charity.

I took my own advice and cleaned out my closet. While I was analyzing all my clothes all I kept thinking was, "I'm just not that girl anymore." You really thrive off the feeling of ridding oneself of the unwanted and moving on.

The Master Plan worked. I made $75!!! I highly recommend taking this route when you are looking to sell your old clothes.

Show your colorful legs

Lately I have been wanting to show my legs, cold weather and all. And I have always had a love for tights mainly because I hate being too cold. So these past 2 weeks I've been trying to make the most of the many pairs that I have in my sock/tights drawer. Maybe these little tips will entice you.

First I want you to remember that adding heels to an outfit will only enhance it and make it that much more complete. But most importantly you are lengthening your legs and giving the appearance of looking longer and leaner. And for most of us we can benefit from that a bit.

Second add some color or prints. Check out tights in simple shades: dark blues, greys, and purple. You don't have to wear hot pink or gold. Black is my go to color for tights but try adding a new shade to an outfit or continuing the same color as I did in the blue dress and blue tights. Be adventurous with prints: subtle polka dots, tiny florals, cut outs etc.

And thirdly if you want to be a little warmer opt for leggings instead. But try them in colors and prints and add your heels! Your comfy look will be so much cuter.

Just get those legs out! Put on a dress, a skirt or shorts! Especially for the petite girls but really for all women. You will feel sexy even in this crappy cold winter. Show them off!

Ra ra GA GA ooh la la

I was very fortunate to go to the Lady Gaga concert last night! My sister took me and her fabulous friend Michael (who was dressed in drag as Lady Gaga. Strangers stopped us all night to have their photo with Michael!) She put on a fabulous show that was awe inspiring and just amazing. They had a photo booth set up sponsored by Virgin http://www.ladyvirgin.com/gallery to take professional photos in a Bad Romance chair. They wanted to see our love, drama and teeth!

Lady Gaga is more to us then a pop star performer. She is an inspiration. She has many lessons to teach us. She spoke last night about following your dreams, believing in yourself, and saying F you to everyone in your way.

What is most important to Katie Cooke Style is that crazy bitch's fashion! She had about 7 necessary wardrobe changes during the show that we all waited for with bating breathe. But what I think is the most important Lady Gaga lesson is confidence. She walks around in those insane outfits like, "What? Yes I'm fabulous, Thank you." And we all need to do the same. It might be hard to walk out of the house with the new platform booties you bought, or the slim fitting, short skirt and heels you want to wear to the office but if you believe in it that's what everyone will see. So listen to Lady Gaga's music and message: Be a Little Monster. Believe in yourself and everyone else will too.

Avatar Wardrobe

I finally went to see Avatar the other night with my husband. And beyond the fact that it was cinematically unbelievable as well as a new movie experience for myself, I couldn't get over how cool the wardrobe for the Pandora natives was. I can't get the image of Neytiri's warrior head gear out of my head. I loved how bad ass and chic she was with the little clothing she was wearing. I hope that James Cameron has helped us get away from the Mischa Barton elastic headband around the forehead look and started a new tribal trend of forehead accessories. Don't you think if you wore something similar to this you would feel as cool as Neytiri? I think I would.

Why you need to wear fur

I can't help but notice all these old ladies and tourists in huge fur coats walking around the city. But I totally understand why they are doing it and why my lovely grandmother Lyra had about 5 furs. They are the epitome of warmth and I can't walk out of the house without one of 2 fur coats when it's 40 degrees and colder outside.

So go to a second hand store or a vintage shop and get one that was already made. That way you wont feel as bad for wearing fur. We don't need to hurt anymore animals.
